<= Previous | April Issues Index | Next => Is it too "green" to celebrate Earth Day immediately following our quotes yesterday from John Muir? I hope not. Today is the 35th observance of Earth Day, reminding us that we should not mess things up so greatly that our children can't happily live on this planet after us, and that we should teach them the same.
Each of us visits this Earth involuntarily, and without an invitation. For me, it is enough to wonder at the secrets. Hear me, four quarters of the world - a relative I am! Give me the strength to walk the soft earth, a relative to all that is! Give me the eyes to see and the strength to understand, that I may be like you. With your power only can I face the winds. There are no passengers on spaceship earth. We are all crew. Those who dwell, as scientists or laymen, among the beauties and mysteries of the earth are never alone or weary of life.... Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts. The true miracle is not walking on water or walking in air, but simply walking on this earth. The most important thing about Spaceship Earth: an instruction book didn't come with it.
