Quotes of the Day for 11 March 2005 - Basketball

The first public game of basketball was played on this day in 1892 at the Springfield, Massachusetts YMCA. Physical education teacher James Naismith had invented it earlier that winter so his charges could stay active during the winter. I've never been much of a sports fan, but I will admit to getting deeply involved with the Seattle Supersonics during their heyday (1976 - 1980, roughly). I did manage to find some Basketball quotes to mark the occasion.

The first time I shot the hook, I was in fourth grade, and I was about five feet eight inches tall. I put the ball up and felt totally at ease with the shot. I was completely confident it would go in and I've been shooting it ever since.
     - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

Basketball is jazz: improvisatory, free, individualistic, corporate, sweaty, fast, exulting, screeching, torrid, explosive, exquisitely designed for letting first the trumpet, then the sax, then the drummer, then the trombonist soar away in virtuoso excellence.
     - Michael Novak

Basketball, a game which won't be fit for people until they set the basket umbilicus-high and return the giraffes to the zoo.
     - Ogden Nash, 1902 - 1971

The game is my wife. It demands loyalty and responsibility, and it gives me back fulfillment and peace.
     - Michael Jordan

In football they measure forty-yard sprints. Nobody runs forty yards in basketball. Maybe you run the ninety-four feet of the court; then you stop, not on a dime, but on Miss Liberty's torch. In football you run over somebody's face.
     - Donald Hall, Basketball: The Purest Sport of Bodies, 1985

I do not like football, which I think of as a game in which two tractors approach each other from opposite directions and collide. Besides, I have contempt for a game in which players have to wear so much equipment. Men play basketball in their underwear, which seems just right to me.
