Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr was born at Boston, Massachusetts on this day in 1841. Like his father he had a keen intellect, clear expression, and his humor sparkled through even in his legal decisions. He served on the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts for twenty years, and though he came to regret it, Teddy Roosevelt named him to the Supreme Court in 1902. Holmes earned the name "The Great Dissenter" during his three decades on the high court, he was often ahead of his time and never shy about writing why he differed from his colleagues.

Many people die with their music still in them. Why is this so? Too often it is because they are always getting ready to live. Before they know it, time runs out.
