Quotes of the Day for 5 March 2005 - The Present

I've been struggling recently with the awareness that my attention has mostly been given over to recollections of the past on one hand and preparations for the future on the other. What's wrong with this picture? It turns out I'm not the first to ponder the question, so today I turn to quotes about the importance of The Present.

Real generosity toward the future lies in giving all to the present.
     - Albert Camus, 1913 - 1960

America, which has the most glorious present still existing in the world today, hardly stops to enjoy it, in her insatiable appetite for the future.
     - Anne Morrow Lindbergh, 1906 - 2001

No mind is much employed upon the present: recollection and anticipation fill up almost all our moments.
     - Dr Samuel Johnson, 1709 - 1784

Trust no future, however pleasant!
Let the dead past bury its dead!
Act, act in the living Present!
Heart within and God overhead.
     - Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, 1807 - 1882

One day at a time - this is enough. Do not look back and grieve over the past, for it is gone: and do not be troubled about the future, for it has not yet come. Live in the present, and make it so beautiful that it will be worth remembering.
     - Ida Scott Taylor

The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, not to worry about the future, not to anticipate troubles, but to live the present moment wisely and earnestly.
     - Siddhartha Gautama, 563 - 483 BC
