And as Paul brings his four-year-old twins along, this new family has quite a head start. Dad wanted some special words to mark the occasion, I hope these fit. Sabrina and Paul, it ain't easy but we wish you well.
Each of us owes it to our spouse, our children, our friends, to be as happy as we can be. And if you don't believe me, ask a child what it's like to grow up with an unhappy parent, or ask parents what they suffer if they have an unhappy child. All children alarm their parents, if only because you are forever expecting to encounter yourself. Our children are not going to be just "our children" - they are going to be other people's husbands and wives and the parents of our grandchildren. Children begin by loving their parents; after a time they judge them; rarely, if ever, do they forgive them. Selective ignorance, a cornerstone of child rearing. You don’t put kids under surveillance: it might frighten you. Parents should sit tall in the saddle and look upon their troops with a noble and benevolent and extremely nearsighted gaze. Parents are not interested in justice, they want quiet.
