Issues Index | Next => A reader, apparently a single person, wrote to me earlier this week in expectation of tomorrow. Knowing that that theme would turn to love, she wanted an anodyne for those who aren't partnered, some affirmation that there is another way to go through life. It's not my way, but that doesn't make it wrong. These quotes are for those who brave life by themselves.
Do not rely completely on any other human being, however dear. We meet all of life's greatest tests alone. Fainthearted animals move about in herds. The lion walks alone in the desert. Let the poet always walk thus. What a commentary on civilization, when being alone is being suspect; when one has to apologize for it, make excuses, hide the fact that one practices it - like a secret vice. My life is spent in a perpetual alternation between two rhythms, the rhythm of attracting people for fear I may be lonely and the rhythm of trying to get rid of them because I know that I am bored. Dreams have only one owner at a time. That's why dreamers are lonely. The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.
