Quotes of the Day for 12 February 2005 - Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln, 16th president of the United States, was born on this day in 1809 on a farm near Nolin Creek in Kentucky. Although I think some of his policies were completely wrong, he was a compelling speaker and a prolific letter writer. From both sources I had a lot to choose from.

In this issue I noted in passing that I didn't agree with some of Abraham Lincoln's policies. As Lincoln is so consistently honored as one of the greatest presidents, several readers felt I was teasing you with that line and wanted an explanation. I didn't want to burden the entire list with my thinking, but I did bang out a bit of it and the curious can read my comments at If I Were King.

It has been my experience that folks who have no vices have very few virtues.

That some should be rich, shows that others may become rich, and hence is just encouragement to industry and enterprise.

The best way to get a bad law repealed is to enforce it strictly.

You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.
