It was on this day in 1908 that New York City adopted the Sullivan Ordinance, a bill prohibited women from smoking in public. Penalties included fines of $5 to $25 and jail terms of up to ten days. Although I was unable to find a date for when this was overturned, we know that silly attempts to regulate public behavior never last long.

One should respect public opinion insofar as is necessary to avoid starvation and keep out of prison, but anything that goes beyond this is voluntary submission to an unnecessary tyranny.
