Albert Schweitzer was born on this day in 1875 at Kayersberg in Upper Alsace. (Alsace lies between France and Germany and is ruled by whoever won the last war. In 1875 it was Germany, now it is France.) A pastor, philosopher, musician, and physician missionary, Dr Schweitzer lived 90 years and saved countless lives. Today we have a few comments he made along the way.

A man is ethical only when life, as such, is sacred to him, that of plants and animals as well as that of his fellowman, and when he devotes himself helpfully to all life that is in need of help.
