Alexander Hamilton was born on this day in 1755 at Charleston on the Caribbean island of Nevis. He came to New York City in 1772 and enrolled at King's College, now Columbia University. He joined the militia early in the Revolution and came to the attention of George Washington who made him one of his aides. He was one of the key writers of the Constitution and a power in the Federalist party, but he managed to antagonize many other players of the day, including insulting Aaron Burr which lead to a famous duel and Hamilton's death. You can see Hamilton on the front of the US ten-dollar bill, looking sternly like he's about to turn you down for a loan.

It has been observed that a pure democracy, if it were practicable, would be the most perfect government. Experience has proved that no position is more false than this.
