Quotes of the Day for 8 January 2005 - Poverty

It was on this day in 1964 that US President Lyndon Johnson delivered his first State of the Union message and said, "This administration here and now declares unconditional war on poverty."      - Anatole France, 1844 - 1924

It would be nice if the poor were to get even half of the money that is spent studying them.
     - Bill Vaughan, 1915 - 1977

The vices of the rich and great are mistaken for errors; and those of the poor and lowly, for crimes.
     - Marguerite Gardiner, Countess of Blessington, 1789 - 1849

To be idle and to be poor have always been reproaches, and therefore every man endeavors with his utmost care to hide his poverty from others, and his idleness from himself.
     - Dr Samuel Johnson, 1709 - 1784

The poor man is not he who is without a cent, but he who is without a dream.
     - Harry Kemp, 1883 - 1960

Poverty is the only load which is the heavier the more loved ones there are to assist in bearing it.
     - Jean Paul Richter, 1763 - 1825
