Quotes of the Day for 6 January 2005 - Voices

Jeanne Darc was born at Domremy, France on this day in 1412. We commonly call her Joan of Arc, but that name comes from her father's pretense at nobility, he briefly used "d'Arc" instead of the family name of "Darc" before the king elevated the family to noble status and gave them the family name "du Lis". That was a minor thing for Charles VII of France to do, as it was Jeanne who had been most forceful in actually getting Charles crowned. This young girl heard voices, and because of them led troops successfully in a number of battles. Her efforts were not properly rewarded, she was captured by the Burgundians, sold to the English, and finally burned at the stake for wearing mens clothes. Our theme today is Voices.

Seek not the favor of the multitude; it is seldom got by honest and lawful means. But seek the testimony of the few; and number not voices, but weigh them.
     - Immanuel Kant, 1724 - 1804

Many people hear voices when no-one is there. Some of them are called mad and are shut up on rooms where they stare at the walls all day. Others are called writers and they do pretty much the same thing.
     - Meg Chittenden

Listen within yourself and look into the infinitude of Space and Time. There can be heard the songs of the Constellations, the voices of the Numbers, and the harmonies of the Spheres.
     - The Divine Pymander

The miracles of the church seem to me to rest not so much upon faces or voices or healing power coming suddenly near to us from afar off, but upon our perceptions being made finer, so that for a moment our eyes can see and our ears can hear what is there
     - Willa Silbert Cather, 1873 - 1947

Solitude is such a potential thing. We hear voices in solitude, we never hear in the hurry and turmoil of life; we receive counsels and comforts, we get under no other condition...
     - Amelia Barr

Speak the truth in a million voices. it is silence that kills.
     - Catherine of Siena, 1347 - 1380
