Quotes of the Day for 5 January 2005 - Divorce

Divorce is an unpleasant and messy undertaking. I've heard this, and I have some personal experience as well. Most of my life I've heard it expressed that this is largely a problem of modern life, but the first record of a legal divorce in what is now the US is dated on this day in 1643. Petitioner Anne Clarke of the Massachusetts Bay Colony was granted a divorce from her absent and adulterous husband Denis by the Quarter Court of Boston, Massachusetts. Needless to say, there have been many comments on the subject since.

     - Don Quinn

A divorce is like an amputation: you survive it, but there's less of you.
     - Margaret Atwood

Divorce, n. A resumption of diplomatic relations and rectification of boundaries.
     - Ambrose Bierce, The Devil's Dictionary

Love, the quest; marriage, the conquest; divorce, the inquest.
     - Helen Rowland, 1875 - 1950

People are reluctant to cite boredom as grounds for divorce.
     - Mason Cooley

What a holler would ensue if people had to pay the minister as much to marry them as they have to pay a lawyer to get them a divorce.
     - Claire Trevor
