Quotes of the Day for 31 December 2004 - Resolutions

I've been involved in various imaging activities for decades, so when I hear the word "resolution" my first thought is always about optics: higher resolution on a scanner or higher resolving power in a lens. But on this one day of the year it has a different meaning. Today it's a commitment to do something we know full well we should have already been doing, but this time we're really going to go for it. I don't normally make resolutions for the new year but I do have a few things I know I should change, maybe I'll make a couple tonight. If you're planning on making your resolutions at a party tonight, I recommend doing any drinking in the same building where you will sleep. I don't want to lose any subscribers on the roads tonight!

Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other one thing.
     - Abraham Lincoln, 1809 - 1865

Resolve to live as with all your might while you do live, and as you shall wish you had done ten thousand years hence.
     - Johathan Edwards, 1703 - 1758

Good fortune will elevate even petty minds, and give them the appearance of a certain greatness and stateliness, as from their high place they look down upon the world; but the truly noble and resolved spirit raises itself, and becomes more conspicuous in times of disaster and ill fortune.
     - Plutarch

It is part of the American character to consider nothing as desperate - to surmount every difficulty by resolution and contrivance.
     - Thomas Jefferson, 1743 - 1826

Those who gave thee a body, furnished it with weakness; but He who gave thee Soul, armed thee with resolution. Employ it, and thou art wise; be wise and thou art happy.
     - Akhenaton, Egyptian pharaoh c 1350 BC

I think in terms of the day's resolutions, not the year's.
     - Henry Moore, 1898 - 1986
