Issues Index | Next => As our slightly-tilted planet makes its annual journey around the sun, there comes a day with the least light available of the whole year. The moment at which the earth tilts as far as possible away from the sun is called the solstice, which occurs at 12:42 UTC (4:42 AM Pacific Time) today. I have little knowledge of southern hemisphere tradition, but where the traditions of northern Europe are continued, we respond to the celestial mechanics and make light a central part of our celebrations at this time of the year.
As far as we can discern, the sole purpose of human existence is to kindle a light of meaning in the darkness of mere being. The sea rises, the light fails, lovers cling to each other, and children cling to us. The moment we cease to hold each other, the sea engulfs us and the light goes out. It is singular how soon we lose the impression of what ceases to be constantly before us. A year impairs, a luster obliterates. There is little distinct left without an effort of memory, then indeed the lights are rekindled for a moment - but who can be sure that the imagination is not the torch-bearer? What is to give light must endure burning. Give light, and the darkness will disappear of itself. There are two ways of spreading light; to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.
