Quotes of the Day for 19 December 2004 - Camping

Camping? I know, you've got to think that the Quotemaster has gone off his rocker to choose camping for a theme just three days before the start of winter and less than a week to Christmas. Okay, I'll admit it's nuts. But I'm in good company. It was on this day in 1777 that George Washington setup camp at Valley Forge.

How hard to realize that every camp of men or beast has this glorious starry firmament for a roof! In such places standing alone on the mountain-top it is easy to realize that whatever special nests we make - leaves and moss like the marmots and birds, or tents or piled stone - we all dwell in a house of one room - the world with the firmament for its roof - and are sailing the celestial spaces without leaving any track.
     - John Muir, 1838 - 1914

The only prize much cared for by the powerful is power. The prize of the general is not a bigger tent, but command.
     - Oliver Wendell Holmes, 1809 - 1894

But the place which you have selected for your camp, though never so rough and grim, begins at once to have its attractions, and becomes a very centre of civilization to you: "Home is home, be it never so homely."
     - Henry David Thoreau, 1817 - 1862

No, in your rural letter box
I leave this note without a stamp
To tell you it was just a tramp
Who used your pasture for a camp.
     - Robert Frost, 1874 - 1963

When the weather is bad as it was yesterday, everybody, almost everybody, feels cross and gloomy. Our thin linen tents, about like a fish seine, the deep mud, the irregular mails, the never to-be-seen paymasters, and "the rest of mankind," are growled about in "old-soldier" style. But a fine day like today has turned out brightens and cheers us all. We people in camp are merely big children, wayward and changeable.
     - Rutherford Birchard Hayes, 1822 - 1893

Camping is nature's way of promoting the motel business.
     - Dave Barry
