Issues Index | Next => On this day in 1903 Orville Wright lifted the Wright Flyer into the air at Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. It was the first manned powered flight by an airplane, even if it only lasted 12 seconds and covered about 120 feet. At the end of the day he and Wilbur were so excited by their successful flights that they went four miles to Kitty Hawk to send a telegram home to Dayton, Ohio. Most of us don't find flying quite so thrilling anymore, but both Ohio and North Carolina still proudly claim to be the home of flight.
A child on a farm sees a plane fly overhead and dreams of a faraway place. A traveler on the plane sees the farmhouse and dreams of home. If I had to choose, I would rather have birds than airplanes. He who would learn to fly one day must first learn to stand and walk and run and climb and dance; one cannot fly into flying. I feel about airplanes the way I feel about diets. It seems to me that they are wonderful things for other people to go on. The stride of passengers off an airplane is always jauntier than the stride on. It is possible to fly without motors, but not without knowledge and skill.
