Nitrous oxide, commonly called laughing gas, was first used as a dental anesthetic on behalf of Dr Horace Wells of Hartford, Connecticut on this day in 1844. Dr Wells was a brave experimenter - after having seen nitrous oxide administered as an entertainment, he actually took the gas himself and had another dentist extract one of Wells' molars the following day.
