Issues Index | Next => This Thursday is celebrated as Thanksgiving Day in the United States. For most of us, possibly all of us, the things for which must be thankful overwhelm the irritations and setbacks, so I choose not to limit this observance to the one day. Because our readership is so thoroughly international in scope, I suggest that those of you living in other nations think of this is Blessings Week at Quotes of the Day. Or, though I make no guarantees, it may be Cynic-Free Week. We'll start with Bravery, as even the most fortunate of us do have things that we need to overcome in life.
Courage is sometimes frail as hope is frail: a fragile shoot between two stones that grows brave toward the sun though warmth and brightness fail, striving and faith the only strength it knows. A brave man is a man who dares to look the Devil in the face and tell him he is a Devil. All brave men love; for he only is brave who has affections to fight for, whether in the daily battle of life, or in physical contests. Whatever you do, you need courage. Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you that you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising that tempt you to believe your critics are right. To map out a course of action and follow it to an end requires some of the same courage that a soldier needs. Peace has its victories, but it takes brave men and women to win them. The bravest are surely those who have the clearest vision of what is before them, glory and danger alike, and yet notwithstanding, go out to meet it. The brave don’t live forever, but the cautious don’t live at all.
