Issues Index | Next => I had two requests for quotes on inspiration this weekend, and realized that I could probably use a little myself. Part of it, for me at least, is the season - I do better with more light and longer hours. Of course, we could all use a little extra inspiration at any time.
I could never tell where inspiration begins and impulse leaves off. I suppose the answer is in the outcome. If your hunch proves a good one, you were inspired; if it proves bad, you are guilty of yielding to thoughtless impulse. Enthusiasm is the inspiration of everything great. Without it no man is to be feared, and with it none despised. The great composer does not set to work because he is inspired, but becomes inspired because he is working. Inspiration is an awakening, a quickening of all man's faculties, and it is manifested in all high artistic achievements. I write when I'm inspired, and I see to it that I'm inspired at nine o'clock every morning. You can't wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club.
