Quotes of the Day for 3 November 2004 - Counting

As I select today's quotes, it is somewhat uncertain who will be sworn in as president next January. I punched my ballot and carefully checked for hanging, dimpled, and pregnant chads before dropping it in the box. As usual, most of my choices have already lost, a basic aspect of being a contrarian. Some of the states look like the count will be close, so we can expect a ration of recounts and general legal foolishness, but it doesn't look like it will be in Florida this year. While the campaigns will continue counting until there is no hope, I pledge to only have one day of counting quotes.

Teaching kids to count is fine, but teaching them what counts is best.
     - Bob Talbert

Counting is the religion of this generation; it is its hope and its salvation.
     - Gertrude Stein, 1874 - 1946

The people who cast the votes don’t decide an election, the people who count the votes do.
     - Joseph Stalin, 1879 - 1953

Many count their chickens before they are hatched; and where they expect bacon, meet with broken bones.
     - Miguel de Cervantes, 1547 - 1616

What culture lacks is the taste for anonymous, innumerable germination. Culture is smitten with counting and measuring; it feels out of place and uncomfortable with the innumerable; its efforts tend, on the contrary, to limit the numbers in all domains; it tries to count on its fingers.
     - Jean Dubuffet, 1901 - 1985

If all power is in the people, if there is no higher law than their will, and if by counting their votes, their will may be ascertained - then the people may entrust all their power to anyone, and the power of the pretender and the usurper is then legitimate. It is not to be challenged since it came originally from the sovereign people.
     - Walter Lippmann, 1889 - 1974
