Issues Index | Next => On this day in 1948, Thomas Dewey defeated Harry S Truman to become president of the United States. At least that was the headline on the Chicago Tribune the next day - the Gallup Poll (the only one available in those days) and the early returns were very clear. Of course Truman had been running around the country by train, talking to voters directly instead of through the press, so the papers hadn't quite caught up with what was actually happening. Today, the polls are much more precise, but they basically seem to tell us it's a tie. We'll have to go vote today before we can know. Personally, I'll be voting for Michael Badnarik. A citizen of America will cross the ocean to fight for democracy, but won't cross the street to vote in a national election. Bad officials are elected by good citizens who do not vote. What is politics but persuading the public to vote for this and support that and endure these for the promise of those? You've got to vote for someone. It's a shame, but it's got to be done. And I always voted at my party's call, The best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter.
