Chuck Berry may not have invented rock and roll, or even recorded the first rock album, but his work was sufficiently formative that he was the first musician inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. His songs were played so widely that he normally toured with only his Gibson guitar, knowing that he could hire musicians who already knew his songs no matter where he went. (This wasn't a big sacrifice, the musicians that backed him on the road included Bruce Springsteen and Steve Miller.) Berry had over 30 top ten hits, but, surprisingly, only one ever topped the chart. His synthesis of Chicago blues and country combined with words of young love, girls, and cars changed music forever.
