That plane was strapped to the belly of a B-29 which carried Yeager to 21,000 feet, where he fired up the rocket and blasted through the sound barrier for the first time. I think this was a great event, and that pursuit of capabilities beyond our current ability is good and noble. On the other hand, speed isn't everything, and may well not be the way to live.
