Issues Index | Next => By order of the Canadian Parliament in 1957, today is "A Day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed ... to be observed on the second Monday in October." The first thanksgiving event in North America actually took place in Canada in 1578, it became an annual holiday in 1879 but the date varied over the years. To our friends and readers in Canada, Happy Thanksgiving.
I would maintain that thanks are the highest form of thought, and that gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder. Best of all is it to preserve everything in a pure, still heart, and let there be for every pulse a thanksgiving, and for every breath a song. For the rest of my life I'm going to trust that God is always at work in all things, and give Him thanks long before my simplest prayers are answered. I awoke with devout thanksgiving for my friends. Not what we say about our blessings, but how we use them, is the true measure of our thanksgiving. Some people are always grumbling because roses have thorns. I am thankful that thorns have roses.
