Quotes of the Day for 7 October 2004 - Score

On this day in 1915 Georgia Tech defeated Cumberland College in a football game with the record score of 222-0. It was the highest number of points ever scored by one team in collegiate football, the most lopsided score, and the fewest first downs. Cumberland was never able to make first down, and Georgia Tech scored before they needed one every time. Cumberland had actually canceled their football program and forgot to tell Tech and was forced to pick up a team in a hurry. It also didn't help that Georgia Tech's coach was John Heisman - yes, that Heisman. I've had bad days, but never scored that badly.

For when the One Great Scorer comes
  to mark against your name,
He writes - not that you won or lost
  - but how you played the Game.
     - Grantland Rice, 1880 - 1954

The game of life is a lot like football. You have to tackle your problems, block your fears, and score your points when you get the opportunity.
     - Lewis Grizzard, 1946 - 1994

Life is a game. Money is how we keep score.
     - Ted Turner

If winning isn't everything, why do they keep score?
     - Vincent Thomas Lombardi, 1913 - 1970

A wise player ought to accept his throws and score them, not bewail his luck.
     - Sophocles, 496 - 406 BC

Please don't ask me what the score is, I'm not even sure what the game is.
     - Ashleigh Ellwood Brilliant
