Issues Index | Next => A quotation is something that somebody said, so I've removed all the quotes attributed to "Anonymous" from the database - if we don't know the somebody it's pretty unlikely that we can be sure of the something. I do still have several hundred entries identified as proverbs. I'm skeptical about some of them, I recall running one as a "Belgian proverb" and then having a Belgian subscriber tell me that they know it in Belgium, but they refer to it as a Polish proverb. For better or worse, many are just too wonderful to dump them, and it has been popular feature in the past to put out an issue with a dozen assorted proverbs. It's been over a year, so here's a new set.
Dawn does not come twice to awaken a man. The road to a friend's house is never long. Sickness comes on horseback and departs on foot. He that lives in a glass house must not throw stones. Once the game is over, the king and the pawn go back into the same box. The bamboo that bends is stronger than the oak that resists. If the wind will not serve, take to the oars. Fear the goat from the front, the horse from the rear, and man from all sides. Fools look to tomorrow; wise men use tonight. Live with wolves, and you will learn to howl. No matter how far you have gone on a wrong road, turn back. Everyone is kneaded out of the same dough but not baked in the same oven.
