Quotes of the Day for 29 September 2004 - Cervantes

It was on this day in 1547 that the great Spanish novelist, poet, soldier, and sometime tax collector Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was born at Alcála de Henares, Spain. Not only did he write the tale of one Don Quixote, but he passed off an amazing number of phrases that remain in common use centuries later.

Though God's attributes are equal, yet his mercy is more attractive and pleasing in our eyes than his justice.

A proverb is a short sentence based on long experience.

Be slow of tongue and quick of eye.

It is the part of a wise man to keep himself to-day for to-morrow, and not to venture all his eggs in one basket.

Little said is soonest mended.

I drink when I have occasion, and sometimes when I have no occasion.
     - All from Miguel de Cervantes, 1547 - 1616
