Issues Index | Next => It was on this day in 1779 that John Paul Jones replied "I have not yet begun to fight!" in response to a surrender demand from Captain Richard Pearson of the British warship Serapis. Jones' Bonhomme Richard had been badly damaged in the first broadside exchange, and was already sinking at the time, but the plucky American prevailed. I'm not much of a fighter, but I have some suitable quotes.
It is inevitable that some defeat will enter even the most victorious life. The human spirit is never finished when it is defeated ... it is finished when it surrenders. Pick battles big enough to matter, small enough to win. Life - the way it really is - is a battle not between Bad and Good but between Bad and Worse. It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog. Life's battles don't always go to the stronger or faster man. But sooner or later the man who wins, is the man who thinks he can. You don't need to be 'straight' to fight and die for your country. You just need to shoot straight.
