Issues Index | Next => I looked out my office window a little bit ago and noticed it was dark, and it wasn't even eight o'clock yet. Then I looked at the calendar and it made sense. Today is the Equinox, at 16:30 UTC. So for me, Summer is over, and it's going to get dark earlier every day for three months. Of course, for a good number of you in Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, you can look forward to lengthening days and the start of Spring. Today is the time when the days and nights are equal, so today's quotes relate to Balance.
Before God we are equally wise - and equally foolish. There are as many nights as days, and the one is just as long as the other in the year's course. Even a happy life cannot be without a measure of darkness, and the word 'happy' would lose its meaning if it were not balanced by sadness. Balance is the perfect state of still water. Let that be our model. It remains quiet within and is not disturbed on the surface. If we could learn how to balance rest against effort, calmness against strain, quiet against turmoil, we would assure ourselves of joy in living and psychological health for life. Almost every wise saying has an opposite one, no less wise, to balance it. There are many in this old world of ours who hold that things break about even for all of us. I have observed, for example, that we all get the same amount of ice. The rich get it in the summertime and the poor get it in the winter.
