Issues Index | Next => Today's theme is The Road. Charles Kuralt, who made a career of finding interesting things along quiet parts of America's byways, was born on this day in 1934. Also, on this day in 1913 the Lincoln Highway opened for traffic, the first coast-to-coast paved road in the US.
It does no harm just once in a while to acknowledge that the whole country isn't in flames, that there are people in the country besides politicians, entertainers, and criminals. Never look down to test the ground before taking your next step; only he who keeps his eye fixed on the far horizon will find the right road. There is no road too long to the man who advances deliberately and without undue haste; there are no honors too distant to the man who prepares himself for them with patience. There's nothing in the middle of the road but a yellow stripe and dead armadillos. Throughout the centuries there were men who took first steps down new roads armed with nothing but their own vision. I have been told I was on the road to hell, but I had no idea it was just a mile down the road with a Dome on it.
