Issues Index | Next => Unlike yesterday, today is a holiday that is actually observed. Yes, this is Labor Day in the US, a day when those who work are honored. This is often observed by spending the day racing around getting the last of the back-to-school shopping done, although I understand that there are some schools that start before Labor Day. Whatever labor you do, and whether or not you get to stop doing it today, I salute you.
Congenial labor is the secret of happiness. Recreation is intended to the mind as whetting is to the scythe, to sharpen the edge of it, which otherwise would grow dull and blunt. He, therefore, that spends his whole time in recreation is ever whetting, never mowing; his grass may grow and his steed starve. As, contrarily, he that always toils and never recreates, is ever mowing, never whetting; laboring too much to little purpose; as good no scythe as no edge. Let us then, be up and doing. Of life's two chief prizes, beauty and truth, I found the first in a loving heart and the second in a laborer's hand. Labor disgraces no man; unfortunately, you occasionally find men who disgrace labor. Each class preaches the importance of those virtues it need not exercise. The rich harp on the value of thrift, the idle grow eloquent over the dignity of labor.
