Issues Index | Next => It was on this day in 1907 that the runners, drivers, and horse-drawn wagons of American Messenger Company gathered around the pergola in Seattle's Pioneer Square to start delivering messages and packages for local merchants, and trays of meals for local restaurants. The pergola protected the stairway leading under the sidewalk to the company's first office. Nineteen-year-old Jim Casey had borrowed $100 from a friend to start the company that would change its name to United Parcel Service in 1919. It's hard to imagine modern life without fleets of delivery trucks bringing all the neat stuff we buy on the internet.
Books are the legacies that a great genius leaves to mankind, which are delivered down from generation to generation as presents to the posterity of those who are yet unborn. Please pack it carefully, there's probably not much you can do to damage a heavy duty unit, but I'm sure the Postal Service could figure out a way. A suburban mother's role is to deliver children obstetrically once, and by car for ever after. The Jews generally give value. They make you pay; but they deliver the goods. In my experience the men who want something for nothing are invariably Christians. The way to transmute your iron duty into gold in everyone's eyes is this: always deliver more than you promise. I'm going to introduce a resolution to have the postmaster general stop reading dirty books and deliver the mail.
