Quotes of the Day for 20 August 2004 - Architecture

Eliel Saarinen was born at Rantasalmi, Finland on this day in 1873. His son Eero was born on this day in 1910. The elder Saarinen was an architect, and after moving to the US in 1923, Eero studied architecture before joining his father's practice. Between them they are responsible for many dramatic buildings including airports, concert halls, schools, and Eero's most famous work, the Gateway Arch at St. Louis. In their honor I thought I'd see what I had in the way of quotes on architecture.

Architecture is inhabited sculpture.
     - Constantin Brancusi, 1876 - 1957

Always design a thing by considering it in its next larger context - a chair in a room, a room in a house, a house in an environment, an environment in a city plan.
     - Eliel Saarinen, 1873 - 1950

I call architecture "petrified music." Really there is something in this: The tone of mind produced by architecture approaches the effect of music.
     - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, 1749 - 1832

No person who is not a great sculptor or painter can be an architect. If he is not a sculptor or painter, he can only be a builder.
     - John Ruskin, 1819 - 1900

Architecture is the learned game, correct and magnificent, of forms assembled in the light.
     - Le Corbusier, 1887 - 1965

The loftier the building, the deeper must the foundation be laid.
     - Thomas à Kempis, 1380 - 1471
