Issues Index | Next => Late last month, reader Brian Dye wrote to ask for a set of quotes on competition or endurance. As I said at the time, I could easily satisfy either, but based on Brian's activities I thought endurance was the more appropriate. He is preparing, with his wife Clara, to run the Ironman Triathlon in a charitable competition. Given what Brian and Clara have put into this effort, I decided they probably deserved another plug, and to get both of Brian's requests filled. Here, then, are the quotes on Competition.
The ability to learn faster than your competitors may be only sustainable competitive advantage. While it's important to win, it's imperative to compete. You don't have to be a fantastic hero to do certain things; to compete. You can be just an ordinary person, sufficiently motivated to reach challenging goals. The intense effort, the giving of everything you've got, is a very pleasant bonus. When I go out on the ice, I just think about my skating. I forget it is a competition. The biggest things are often the easiest to do because there is so little competition. Do your work with your whole heart, and you will succeed - there's so little competition.
