Issues Index | Next => Henry Ford was born near Dearborn, Michigan on this day in 1863. Young Henry didn't take much to farm work and was apprenticed as a machinist at age 16. He was involved in the manufacture or repair of a wide range of equipment, including his father's farm implements, until he decided to build a car that could be bought by someone other than the wealthy. Please don't write to tell me that he was antisemitic or that he supported Hitler, I don't applaud that side of his story myself. Ford worked hard to advance his various passions, some of them long after they made sense and others that never did.

One of the greatest discoveries a man makes, one of his great surprises, is to find he can do what he was afraid he couldn't do. Quality means doing it right when no one is looking.
