Quotes of the Day for 29 July 2004 - Dag Hammarskjold

The Swedish economist and diplomat Dag Hjalmar Agne Carl Hammarskjold was born on this day in 1905. His active career was capped by his unanimous election as Secretary General of the United Nations in 1953, and the even more amazing unanimous reelection. Hammarskjold campaigned vigorously for peace in that post until his death in a 1961 airplane accident while negotiating peace in the Congo. In his honor, here are some quotes on peace.

Freedom from fear could be said to sum up the whole philosophy of human rights.

It is more noble to give yourself completely to one individual than to labor diligently for the salvation of the masses.

Life only demands from you the strength you possess. Only one feat is possible - not to have run away.

Pray that your loneliness may spur you into finding something to live for, great enough to die for.

If you're driving down the highway in the middle of the night and you see a sign that says Bridge Out, pray for some intellectual understanding of that message, or you're going to have an experience you'll never forget!
