Quotes of the Day for 27 July 2004 - Carl Gustav Jung

Carl Gustav Jung was born at Kesswil, Switzerland on yesterday's date in 1875. I didn't recognize him yesterday because, in the world of quotes, few can compete with Bernard Shaw. Jung was an only child for the first ten years of his life, and lived largely in a world of the imagination. After getting his medical degrees, he continued this inner focus. He corresponded with Sigmund Freud with relish, but came to reject Freud's emphasis on sex as the root of his patients's problems. I'm no judge of psychiatric evolution, but he left behind a lot of quotes that seem profound.

Often the hands will solve a mystery that the intellect has struggled with in vain.

If there is anything we wish to change in the child, we should first examine it and see whether it is not something that could better be changed in ourselves.

It is the individual's task to differentiate himself from all the others and stand on his own feet. All collective identities ... interfere with the fulfillment of this task. Such collective identities are crutches for the lame, shields for the timid.

The creation of something new is not accomplished by the intellect but by the play instinct acting from inner necessity. The creative mind plays with the objects it loves.

The pendulum of the mind alternates between sense and nonsense, not between right and wrong.

Show me a sane man and I will cure him for you.
