Issues Index | Next => Alexandre Dumas, père (that's French for father, to distinguish him from one of his three bastard sons who shared the same name and profession) was born at Villers-Cotterêts, Aisne, near Paris on this day in 1802. He created characters that couldn't possibly be, larger than life, characters such as The Three Musketeers, The Count of Monte Cristo, and The Man in the Iron Mask. He tried to live life on the scale of the characters he created, but even as the most successful French author of the era he could never earn enough to pay all his bills.
