Issues Index | Next => Philip was born at Bruges, The Netherlands, on this day in 1478. He was a Habsburg, the son of Maximilian of Germany who would become Holy Roman Emperor. He married Ferdinand and Isabella's daughter Juana (Joanna), and because several of her siblings died, he ended up as king of Spain for a few months. Known as Philip the Handsome, he took to his bed with a fever and died, in her grief the queen went mad and was known as Juana la Loca. Other than the name, which I'm grabbing as today's theme, Philip was inconsequential although his son was Charles V, king of Spain and one of the more powerful Holy Roman Emperors. Here, then, are some thoughts on appearance.
Beautiful bodies and beautiful personalities rarely go together. The world is governed more by appearance than realities so that it is fully as necessary to seem to know something as to know it. Love built on beauty, soon as beauty, dies. It is amazing how complete is the delusion that beauty is goodness. All kinds of beauty do not inspire love; there is a kind which only pleases the sight, but does not captivate the affections. I require only three things of a man. He must be handsome, ruthless, and stupid.
