Issues Index | Next => Reader Brian Dye wrote to ask for a set of quotes on competition or endurance. I could easily satisfy either, but based on Brian's activities I thought endurance was the more appropriate. He is preparing, with his wife Clara, to run the Ironman Triathlon in a charitable competition. (See ad below.) The event includes a 2.4 mile swim followed by 112 miles by bicycle and then running a full marathon (26.2 miles). If that's not endurance, how about their training regimen? Brian and Clara have swam 360 miles, biked 6,610, and run 1,599.
To endure is the first thing that a child ought to learn, and that which he will have the most need to know. There is no royal road to anything. One thing at a time, all things in succession. That which grows fast, withers as rapidly. That which grows slowly, endures. The spirit, the will to win, and the will to excel are the things that endure. These qualities are so much more important than the events that occur. To endure is greater than to dare; to tire out hostile fortune; to be daunted by no difficulty; to keep heart when all have lost it; to go through intrigue spotless; to forego even ambition when the end is gained - who can say this is not greatness? Fame is vapor, popularity an accident, riches take wings. Only one thing endures and that is character. That which was hard to endure is sweet to remember.
