Quotes of the Day for 9 July 2004 - Clothing

On this day in 1819, in the town of Spencer, Massachusetts a naked baby was brought into the world. We don't know what Elias Howe's mother dressed him in, but we know it was not as refined as what babies wear today and took longer to make; Elias hadn't yet invented the sewing machine. I've picked some quotes on clothing.

If most of us are ashamed of shabby clothes and shoddy furniture, let us be more ashamed of shabby ideas and shoddy philosophies.
     - Albert Einstein, 1879 - 1955

It is long accepted by the missionaries that morality is inversely proportional to the amount of clothing people wore.
     - Alex Carey

What is outside yourself does not convey much worth; Clothes do not make the man, the saddle not the horse.
     - Angelius Silesius

He is ill clothed, who is bare of virtue.
     - Benjamin Franklin, 1706 - 1790

It is an interesting question how far men would retain their relative rank if they were divested of their clothes.
     - Henry David Thoreau, 1817 - 1862

Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society.
     - Mark Twain, 1835 - 1910
