He went to sea at age thirteen and sailed for both England and Russia, and was a captain by age 21. After having a mutinous crew member flogged, the crewman died and his family brought murder charges against the young captain but there was no basis for it. He added Jones to his name and joined the new colonial navy when it comprised only five ships. He is best known for shouting "I have not yet begun to fight," after his ship was badly damaged in a fight with HMS Serapis. His ship, Bonhomme Richard, sank but he won the battle and took Serapis. Of course, today's theme is Fight.
Hear me, my chiefs! I am tired. My heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands, I will fight no more forever. The world is a fine place and worth fighting for. A man who has nothing which he is willing to fight for, nothing which he cares about more than he does about his personal safety, is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself. He who fights monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. When you gaze long into the abyss the abyss also gazes into you. If you must choose between two paths, either of which will bring death and defeat, then choose the path wherein you die fighting for honor and justice. We have women in the military, but they don't put us in the front lines. They don't know if we can fight or if we can kill. I think we can. All the general has to do is walk over to the women and say, "You see the enemy over there? They say you look fat in those uniforms."
