A tyrant must put on the appearance of uncommon devotion to religion. Subjects are less apprehensive of illegal treatment from a ruler whom they consider god-fearing and pious. On the other hand, they do less easily move against him, believing that he has the gods on his side. The multitude which is not brought to act as a unity, is confusion. That unity which has not its origin in the multitude is tyranny. Tyrants are seldom free; the cares and the instruments of their tyranny enslave them. It is far easier to act under conditions of tyranny than to think. The means of defense against foreign danger historically have become the instruments of tyranny at home. When I despair, I remember that all through history the ways of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers and for a time they can seem invincible, but in the end they always fall. Think of it: always.
