Anthropologists tell us that all games were developed to train (mostly) men the skills they might need in battle, chess obviously is designed to train generals. Of course the population of chess players probably exceeds the planet's need for generals, but it brings pleasure to the players just the same.

The chess pieces are the block alphabet which shapes thoughts; and these thoughts ... express their beauty abstractly.... I have come to the personal conclusion that while all artists are not chess players, all chess players are artists. On the human chessboard, all moves are possible. Chess teaches you to control the initial excitement you feel when you see something that looks good and it trains you to think objectively when you're in trouble. [Chess is] as elaborate a waste of human intelligence as you can find outside an advertising agency.
