Issues Index | Next => It's been a bit of a rough month, with my move and the inevitable effort to catch up afterwards, so when I saw a reader's request for quotes on Humor I was definitely ready for it.
Humor is the only test of gravity, and gravity of humor; for a subject which will not bear raillery is suspicious, and a jest which will not bear serious examination is false wit. Common sense and a sense of humor are the same thing, moving at different speeds. A sense of humor is just common sense, dancing. Analyzing humor is like dissecting a frog. Few people are interested and the frog dies of it. Imagination was given to man to compensate him for what he is not; a sense of humor to console him for what he is. A person without a sense of humor is like a wagon without springs; jolted by every pebble in the road. There's no trick to being a humorist when you have the whole government working for you.
