Issues Index | Next => The firewall protecting my servers here slowed down rather dramatically yesterday afternoon due to a burst of unwanted traffic. After these messages go out, I'll be rebuilding the firewall with a system able to withstand several times as much traffic so I don't have to go through that again for a while. So my mind is on walls, and that's what you get in these quotes.
The walls we build around us to keep sadness out also keep out the joy. Wit is the only wall between us and the dark. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope ... and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance. Information is the oxygen of the modern age. It seeps through the walls topped by barbed wire, it wafts across the electrified borders. On ruins one can begin to build. Anyhow, looking out from ruins one clearly sees; there are no obstructing walls. There are two things that are more difficult than making an after-dinner speech: climbing a wall which is leaning toward you and kissing a girl who is leaning away from you.
