Issues Index | Next => With impressive regularity, the seasons roll along. At 00:57 UTC (GMT to old-timers) today the earth marked the solstice, the start of Summer in the northern hemisphere, the start of Winter in the southern. Here are some thoughts on Seasons.
The events of childhood do not pass but repeat themselves like seasons of the year. To be interested in the changing seasons is a happier state of mind than to be hopelessly in love with spring. What we are is seldom what we want to be, while what we want to be is either denied us or changes with the seasons. Summer afternoon, summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language. Everything harmonizes with me, which is harmonious to thee, O Universe. Nothing for me is too early nor too late, which is in due time for thee. Everything is fruit to me which thy seasons bring, O Nature: from thee are all things, in thee are all things, to thee all things return. Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass under trees on a summer's day, listening to the murmur of the water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is by no means a waste of time.
