On this day in 1858, Abraham Lincoln accepted the Illinois State Republican Convention's nomination as candidate for the US Senate. His acceptance speech included the famous phrase, "A house divided against itself cannot stand". He went on to debate admission of Kansas as a slave state with his opponent, Stephen Douglas, and though he lost the race for the Senate his speeches and debates propelled him into the national prominence that won the presidency two years later.
