Issues Index | Next => Peter János Weissmüller was born at Freidorf, Austria-Hungary (currently Timisoara, Romania) on this day in 1904. He grew up in Chicago (where he was called Johnny) and became a champion swimmer while at the University of Chicago. He won three Olympic medals in 1924 and two more in 1928 and set 67 world records during the '20s. I had a request for swimming quotes, and decided that Weissmüller's birthday is a good time to run them. In addition to his swimming, he starred in the title role in twelve Tarzan movies.

Be not the slave of your own past ... plunge into the sublime seas, dive deep, and swim far, so shall you come back with self-respect, with new power, with an advanced experience, that shall explain and overlook the old. The man who is swimming against the stream knows the strength of it.
